Summer Habits That Can Cause Hair Loss

Summer Habits That Can Cause Hair Loss

Bet you’ve been having too much fun this summer to consider what you might be doing that may be damaging your hair…

There are some habits we do, that we’re totally unaware of, that can be damaging our hair and roots and causing hair loss. Let’s have a look at some of those idiosyncrasies and see if we can weave them out of our summer before it’s too late.

Not Covering Your Hair From The Sun

UVA and UVB rays damage the keratin protein that makes up our hair. When our hair’s protein is damaged, it weakens, and yup, you guessed it, is more prone to breakage and hair loss. So, if you need motivation to wear that cute sun hat or hair scarf, please go for it, we love it already!

Not Rinsing After the Pool or Ocean

Chlorine and salt water dry out our hair. And you can feel it as soon as you get out of the water. In order to prevent salt water or chlorine damage, please rinse your hair with warm water to wash out any salt or chlorine. That is if you’re not going to protect your hair while you swim of course. If you have locs, this is a must. Squeeze any excess water out of your locs to ensure they are completely dry post swim.

Hair Accessories and Styles

The wrong hair accessories will break our hair and weaken our roots. When you’re tying your hair up and off your back during those sweaty moments, make sure not to put your hair up into a tight hairstyle. We don’t want to stress our roots or our edges. Be careful how you tie up your hair and what you’re using to tie up your hair. Excess breakage is really just not worth it.

Using the Wrong Products

Using the wrong products on our hair, like shampoos that dry out our hair, will weaken our hair in those summer months. With all that sun exposure, we need to be extra caring in the way we look after our hair. Look for hydrating shampoos that won’t make your hair feel like straw before applying your conditioner. Shampoos like Dr Locs collection of shampoos contain ingredients like Jojoba Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Rose Essential Oil, and Lavender Essential Oil - just to name a few - which will add love to your hair and not strip it of what it needs to look healthy and voluminous.

If you’re not already using our Leave-In Conditioner, now's the time, before winter surprises us, to add in all the invigorating moisture your hair loves and needs.
