Okay so here's my perspective & I'm being very honest & serious when i say: wash your locs when it's dirty.
For most of my clients, that means every 2 weeks to once a month — but it depends on your lifestyle, environment, and hair needs.
👉 If you work out daily or sweat often, you’ll need to wash more frequently.
👉 If you work in dusty environments, you'll need to wash more often as well.
I get this question a lot online and the simple truth is some may be overthinking it because of how they started their loc journey. You may've been told not to wash your hair for months because your hair wasn't locked yet.
As a professional loctician, I'm always cleansing my client's hair in every loc stage----from baby stage to adulthood stage.
But as far as how often, it truly depends on your lifestyle (ie. you workout everday and sweat a lot), your environment (ie. you may work in dusty environments like construction) and other factors.
Pro Tips from behind the chair:
-
Always wash your roots and the ends of your locs.
-
Rinse shampoo and conditioner out completely.
-
If you wash twice a month, make one of those washes with a clarifying shampoo to remove excessive dirt and oils.
Your Wash Day Routine with Dr Locs:
-
Clarify with Sweet Peppermint Clarifying Shampoo (use 1x per month).
2. Cleanse with Yasin Shampoo for your regular washes.
3. Nourish with Amla Extract Conditioner — light, hydrating, no buildup.
4. Hydrate & Seal daily with Jinan or Island Breeze Moisture Mix + Yaya Oil.
This balance keeps your locs clean, hydrated, and thriving.
I'll be back next week Wednesday to answer another common question. Have a great week, Village!
