How to Revive Old or Neglected Locs: Step-by-Step Repair Guide

We're on it. It's 2025 and it's time to repair those locs. With the right techniques and products, you can restore your locs to their full potential. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you rejuvenate your locs and bring them back to their happy place.

1. Addressing Buildup

One of the most common issues with neglected locs is product buildup. To combat this, we recommend using the Dr. Locs Detox System, which includes:

  • Pre-Cleanse - This Pre-Cleanser is a special blend of cleansing and softening natural ingredients for a deep refreshing cleanse before shampooing. The Pre-Cleanse removes trapped oil, dirt, and product build-up from the scalp and new growth area.

  • Yasin Shampoo - Dr. Locs’ Yasin Shampoo gently cleans your locs and scalp restoring it to a balanced pH. The formula has been tested to assure no build-up will sustain in locs after use. The refreshing mint and lavender scent will leave locs feeling clean and refreshed.

  • Amla Extract Conditioner- we love, love, love this product! Creator, Chimere Faulk, loctician of 15 years, tested this formula for years before finally deciding it was perfect for her Dr Locs customers maintaining her promise to provide only buildup free products. Rich in antioxidants, vitamin E & C, our Amla Extract formula, regenerates and promotes healthy hair from a cellular level.

  • Jinan Moisture Mix- this Leave-In Conditioner rehydrates your scalp and locs daily. It’s perfect for dry locs. The solution is formulated to give moisture and leave locs soft without an oily feel.

These products are specifically formulated to gently remove buildup while nourishing your hair, so your locs stay hydrated and happy.

2. Dealing with Matted Locs

When locs are neglected, they often become matted and tangled. Here’s how to approach this:

  • Wet Your Hair: Start by wetting your hair to increase elasticity.

  • Use Jinan Moisture Mix: Spray this onto the matted areas to soften and hydrate your hair.

  • Separate Carefully: Avoid cutting your locs. Instead, gently pull them apart with your fingers. If necessary, you can use scissors to clip a single painful strand—but avoid chopping into your locs.

  • Work with Wet Hair: Hair is more elastic and easier to detangle when wet, allowing you to see which strands belong to which loc.

3. Pre-Cleanse for Deep Cleaning

Before shampooing, start with the Dr. Locs Pre-Cleanse:

  • Spray the Pre-Cleanse throughout your roots and locs, focusing on areas with flakage or buildup.

  • Use a damp cloth to rub the solution into your scalp and down the length of your locs.

  • Rinse with cool water to lift excess buildup. This process may need to be repeated if you have heavy buildup.

4. Shampoo Thoroughly

Now it’s time to shampoo:

5. Hydrate and Condition

After cleansing, it’s essential to restore moisture:

  • Apply the Amla Extract Conditioner to your locs and scalp.

  • For extra hydration, leave the conditioner on for 30 minutes or sit under a steamer for 20–30 minutes. No plastic cap is needed.

  • Massage the conditioner into your roots and scalp to encourage hair growth and improve circulation.

6. Repairing Broken Locs

If you’re dealing with breakage:

  • Assess the Damage: If your locs are breaking at the root, this may indicate an internal health issue. If the breakage is in the middle, consult a skilled loctician who can repair your locs using stitching techniques or human kinky hair extensions.

7. Maintenance Tips

To keep your locs healthy moving forward:

  • Use lightweight, non-gunky products like the Dr. Locs line to avoid buildup.

  • Regularly cleanse and condition your hair to maintain moisture and elasticity.

  • Be gentle with your locs and avoid harsh treatments or excessive manipulation.

By following these steps, you can transform your locs. Take your time, use the right products, and show your locs the love they deserve!
