How to Retwist Your Locs at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

Retwisting your locs at home can save you time and money while helping you maintain your locs the way you like them. Here’s everything you need to know to retwist on your own:

What You’ll Need:

Step 1: Wash Your Hair

Start by wetting your hair thoroughly, ensuring your locs are damp from root to tip. You can either wash your hair in the sink or shower, but the shower, we find, is more convenient.

  1. Pre-Cleanse: Spray the Pre-Cleanse around your roots and locs. Gently massage it in and rinse with warm water. Repeat this process twice if you have buildup. If there’s no buildup, one cleanse should be sufficient.

  2. Shampoo: Use the Yasin Shampoo, starting with a small amount for your first wash. Apply it to your roots and ends of the locs. Rinse well, especially the ends. After the first wash, your hair should begin to lather more. Repeat this process 3 times to ensure all dirt is removed.

  3. Focus on Problem Areas: Pay special attention to the areas behind your ears, the middle of your head, and the locs themselves, where dirt tends to accumulate.

Step 2: Dry Your Hair

After your final rinse, carefully wring out your locs from top to bottom. Use your first big towel to gently towel-dry your hair. Wrap your hair in the towel and sit down to begin the retwisting process with your second towel, which will help remove any remaining moisture.

Step 3: Apply Moisture and Products

  1. Jinan Moisture Mix: Spray the Jinan Moisture Mix throughout your locs, focusing on your roots and down to the tips. Massage it in thoroughly.

  2. Imani Locking Spray: Pull your hair into a top ponytail and begin spraying the Imani Locking Spray, one row at a time. Be sure to apply the spray to each loc before retwisting it.

Step 4: Retwist Each Loc

  1. Take a single loc, and begin retwisting it from root to tip. Apply a silver clip to hold the loc in place.
  2. Continue this process for each loc, ensuring they stay securely twisted.

Tip: You can use one clip for a few locs, but the goal is to prevent the locs from untwisting during the drying process.

Step 5: Dry Your Locs

  1. Sit under a hooded dryer for at least 30 minutes to allow your locs to dry. You can use this time to relax, watch a movie, or catch up on reading.
  2. After the first drying session, remove the clips and place your hair in two high pigtails. This helps the bottom and back of your hair dry more effectively.
  3. Set your timer for another 30 minutes under the dryer.

Step 6: Final Touches

Once your locs are fully dry, check to make sure there’s no dampness inside by squeezing each loc. If they’re still wet, set your timer for a few more minutes.

Finally, apply Yaya Oil to your locs for added shine and moisture.

Now you’re ready to rock your fresh, retwisted locs!

Frequently asked questions

Yes — locs can be started on virtually any hair texture. The technique that works best and the timeline you can expect will vary depending on your texture. Finer hair typically takes longer to lock and may require more patience in the early stages.

Sisterlocs is a form of interlocking — they use the same foundational technique. The difference is size and a proprietary pattern. Interlocking can be done in a range of sizes and is not limited to the Sisterlocs system.

Loc extensions should be placed as a permanent technique by a qualified loctician. When done correctly, the extension integrates naturally into the hair over time. When done incorrectly, the hair often can't sustain them and the client removes them early.

Yes — comb coils are one of the most common ways to start locs. As the hair grows and matures through the baby and teenage stages, the coil gradually locks into a permanent loc.

Interlocking and loc extensions are generally considered the most durable and fastest-to-progress techniques. If skipping the baby stage entirely is the goal, loc extensions with a qualified loctician may be the right option. However, understand that with all processes, you will go thru a process.
