How Does Drinking Water Affect Hair Health and Growth?
Whether we see it or not, like our skin, our hair is made up of cells. Water is a necessary agent that will deliver food and nutrition to the cell, while washing away any toxins that may have nestled itself into your body. Your hair follicles constantly need to be hydrated in order to promote healthy growing locs. Water makes up one fourth of the hair strand, without water, your body won’t be able to reproduce strong and healthy cells for strong and healthy locs.
Can Hair Loss be Linked to Dehydration?
Absolutely. While dehydration may not be the direct cause for hair loss, it very well may be the explanation for thinning hair. Especially if you notice you have exceedingly dry skin, this can be your bodies way of letting you know it’s desperately ready for a drink (a non-alcoholic one of course). If you’ve noticed an unnatural amount of thinning, and you’re not ready to see a specialist yet, try doubling your water intake for two weeks and see how that improves and affects your overall health.
Frizz, breakage and Shine
Staying hydrated is essential for healthy looking skin and hair. When you don’t consume the proper amount of water your hair will not receive the proper nutrients and minerals it needs to grow in strong and thick. One of the leading causes for frizz, breakage and dull looking locs is due to dehydration. One should drink at least half their body weight in oz. per day. For example if you weigh 150 lbs. you should be drinking 75 oz. of water per day. A great way to increase water intake is by eating fruits and vegetables. You will not only increase the amount of water your body receives, but also a lot more sugars, nutrients and vitamins your body needs to stay healthy and fit.
How to Stay Hydrated
Try keeping a bottle of water close to your working desk and in your car. Rather than reaching for a second or third coffee, try to hydrate yourself with more fresh water. Sometimes our fatigue very well may be our bodies way of letting us know it’s thirsty. Curb your caffeine addiction with more hydrating liquids, like water, and you will notice a major difference in your overall concentration and stamina. Try to add more fruits to your diet and avoid salty and inflammatory foods that keep you dehydrated. If you find water boring, try adding lemon, a fresh cucumber, mint leaves or a cooled ginger tea. All it takes are these subtle changes in our habits to improve our overall health and lifestyle.
