Our Favorite Ingredients for a Healthy Scalp and Locs in 2024

When you get knee-deep in the natural world you start to realize there are so many fantastic ingredients out there for your skin and hair. It can even be overwhelming and hard to decide what’s best for your skin and hair. It can also be tricky knowing which ingredients are right for you. In this article we’re going to have a look at some of our favorite ingredients to use in your locs for a healthy scalp and hair.

1. Argan oil

Argan oil might be more expensive than other oils, but it makes your skin and hair soft. We find argon oil really gets the job done with a noticeable difference. That’s also why we had to use it in Dr Locs’ Yaya Oil and Jinan Moisture Mix, there was no way we were going to curate moisturizing products without including argon oil as an essential ingredient.

2. Amla extract

Amla extract is less well known than many other oils and natural herbs, but we absolutely love it. This product really helps with moisture and strengthening the hair. That’s why we included it in our Color treated line, specifically in our Amla Extract Color Protecting Conditioner. When we color treat our hair we are in essence damaging our hair and making it harder for our hair to retain moisture. So, we really had to find that natural ingredient that could get the job done at giving back what was lost.

3. Grapeseed oil

There are so many reasons to love grapeseed oil. One reason is because it’s such a common oil and not all that expensive. It’s also an ingredient many of us already have on a shelf in the kitchen. Grapeseed oil can be found in the Jasin Shampoo and the Yaya Oil because we love the way it adds moisture, strengthen and shine to locs.

4. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is a must have for anyone who wants to have a few essential oils in the house. It’s an astringent and it’s so mighty powerful, you don't need a lot of it. Never use it by itself, it’s really that strong. It needs a carrier oil and be mindful that the scent is very strong, somewhat akin to eucalyptus oil. It's a great addition to any array of ingredients but we especially love it for its cleansing attributes. You can find Tea tree oil in our Jinan moisture Mix, the Pre-Cleanse, and our Yasin Shampoo.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — locs can be started on virtually any hair texture. The technique that works best and the timeline you can expect will vary depending on your texture. Finer hair typically takes longer to lock and may require more patience in the early stages.

Sisterlocs is a form of interlocking — they use the same foundational technique. The difference is size and a proprietary pattern. Interlocking can be done in a range of sizes and is not limited to the Sisterlocs system.

Loc extensions should be placed as a permanent technique by a qualified loctician. When done correctly, the extension integrates naturally into the hair over time. When done incorrectly, the hair often can't sustain them and the client removes them early.

Yes — comb coils are one of the most common ways to start locs. As the hair grows and matures through the baby and teenage stages, the coil gradually locks into a permanent loc.

Interlocking and loc extensions are generally considered the most durable and fastest-to-progress techniques. If skipping the baby stage entirely is the goal, loc extensions with a qualified loctician may be the right option. However, understand that with all processes, you will go thru a process.
